Online Bachelor of Arts in Social Justice and Human Rights

This program prepares you for a rewarding career where you can make a difference in your community and around the world. If you’re interested in volunteering or working for organizations that advance the causes of social justice and human rights, this program may be a great fit for you. Upon graduation, you’ll be prepared to work in community-engaged advocacy and effectively support marginalized groups.

The skills you’ll develop in this program

A social justice and human rights degree is an interdisciplinary program that prepares you to advocate for rights and equality in local, national and global contexts. This program draws from a variety of social science disciplines including politics, sociology, history, anthropology and linguistics. Examining perspectives from all of these disciplines will prepare you to address pressing issues related to racial justice, immigration, feminism, refugee rights and more.

In addition to gaining broad expertise in these topics, you’ll be equipped with transferable skills from across the social sciences, including writing, communication, research and statistical analysis of human rights data. As you hone your skills in writing and research, you’ll gain essential knowledge related to rights and justice by taking nine credit hours from three different interdisciplinary tracks:

  • Identity and place.
  • Law, citizenship and migration.
  • Social justice and inequality.

Get the opportunity to participate in research with faculty

As a student, you’ll have the opportunity to participate in research with faculty for funding or academic credit through the New College Undergraduate Inquiry and Research Experience program. The faculty you meet throughout your courses can help you connect to other faculty who share your interests and have space for an NCUIRE student. This research can strengthen your resume and allow you to stand out among the competition when entering the workforce.

Additionally, this bachelor’s degree can be completed as part of an Accelerated Master’s program. When accepted, you can earn a master’s degree in as little as one year after completing your undergraduate degree. This opportunity saves you time and money while giving you advanced knowledge in your field. Applicable master's degrees include:

Online Master of Education in Special Education

By connecting theory and practice and through hands-on coursework, you’ll master classroom management, data-driven instruction and teaching strategies. Your learning culminates in an action research applied project, where you’ll identify a real challenge in K–12 education, implement an intervention and measure its impact. This experience ensures you graduate with practical, research-backed solutions to support student success.

Along the way, you’ll build expertise in advocacy, collaboration, critical thinking, data literacy, learning design, principled innovation, technology integration and teacher leadership, preparing you to make a lasting impact.

Choosing the right special education master’s for you

ASU offers multiple online graduate programs in special education, each designed to support different career goals. Advance your expertise, earn teaching certification or specialize in autism or applied behavior analysis with these flexible, research-driven programs.

  • Special education
    • This program will deepen your knowledge of K–12 special education and is ideal if you’re currently certified or do not need certification to reach your goals. While earning this degree does not lead to teacher certification, you’ll build expertise in teaching and research-based intervention strategies.
  • Special education with teacher certification*
    • Designed for students seeking teacher certification in K–12 special education, this program offers two routes:
      • Traditional route: Complete coursework online while gaining hands-on experience through internships and residencies in local school districts. You can earn dual certification in K–8 elementary education and K–12 mild/moderate disabilities special education. A special education-only certification option is also available.
      • Alternative pathway route: Developed for current full-time teachers on an Arizona Alternative Teaching Certificate (or equivalent in other states), this option allows you to immediately apply coursework to your classrooms while earning a K–12 mild/moderate disabilities certification.

*Both routes include teacher observations, internships, apprentice teaching and student teaching to ensure you’ll gain practical, real-world experience.

  • Special education with a concentration in autism spectrum disorders
    • This program prepares educators, interventionists, psychologists, speech pathologists, behavior analysts and family members to provide research-based support for autistic individuals. You may want to pursue this path if working exclusively with children and adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder is a career goal. You’ll complete a customized practicum and an applied project or portfolio demonstrating your expertise.
  • Special education with a concentration in applied behavior analysis (ABA)
    • If you want to specialize in applied behavior analysis (ABA) to support individuals with learning and behavior challenges in education, business or health care, this program — offering verified university coursework for pursuing Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) certification — may be your best choice. While BCBA certification is not required, all instructors are Board Certified Behavior Analysts, ensuring you’ll receive expert guidance. The program culminates in a capstone or applied project.

Online Teacher Certification Graduate Certificate

The graduate certificate in teaching is a two-semester program aligned with the Arizona Department of Education’s requirements for teacher certification in mild/moderate special education, secondary physical education, elementary education and secondary education.

This certificate can be completed via one of two pathways:

  • Alternative pathway: To be eligible for this pathway, you must be employed as a full-time teacher of record aligned with their certification area on the Alternative Teaching Certificate from the Arizona Department of Education (or out-of-state comparable certificate) before starting the program.

  • Secondary education physical education: Graduates earn an institutional recommendation from ASU for Arizona teacher certification in secondary education, 6-12, along with the physical education, preK-12 endorsement.

Professional licensure and certification:

  • Graduates are eligible to earn an institutional recommendation from ASU for Arizona teacher certification from the Arizona Department of Education.
  • Graduates can directly apply for licensure through the Arizona Department of Education and via licensure-to-licensure review in another state. To be eligible for an educator credential in Arizona, candidates must meet all requirements specified by the Arizona Department of Education. To apply via licensure-to-licensure review, candidates must hold a comparable, standard and valid out-of-state educator license before applying for licensure.
    • Note: The out-of-state license must have no pending/active deficiencies or disciplinary actions.
  • Arizona Revised Statutes require many professions to have an active fingerprint clearance card before or as a condition of licensure, certification or employment. We highly recommend that students apply for an Identify Verified Prints (IVP) fingerprint clearance card before degree completion to facilitate teacher certification.

Online Master of Education in Secondary Education – Teacher Certification

This secondary education master’s with teacher certification is ideal if you already have a bachelor’s degree in any field and want to further your knowledge in teaching grades 6–12. This program equips you to teach subjects such as math, science, English or history while developing essential skills in classroom management, communication and inclusive teaching practices.

Through coursework, exams and hands-on experiences, you'll be prepared to enter the classroom as a subject-matter expert. Plus, if you commit to teaching in Arizona after graduation, you may qualify for the Arizona Teachers Academy at ASU tuition scholarship.

Two pathways to certification

This program offers two flexible pathways to teacher certification, designed to accommodate your unique situation. Both routes connect theory and practice through high-quality instruction from ASU faculty, along with valuable internship and student teaching experiences. However, the structure of each path varies.

  • Traditional certification pathway: Ideal if you’re not yet teaching full time, this route combines online coursework with on-site internships and student teaching. You’ll work with a placement coordinator to secure these experiences, ensuring you gain the practical knowledge needed for certification. The internship typically requires one day a week or two half-days a week, while student teaching is a full-time commitment. It’s important to plan financially, as student teaching demands your full focus with no flexibility in scheduling.
  • Alternative certification pathway: If you’re already employed as a full-time teacher under an Arizona Alternative Teaching Certificate (or equivalent in other states), this route allows you to earn certification while continuing to teach. Unlike the traditional pathway, you’ll need to secure your teaching position before applying to ASU, but this option lets you implement what you learn in real-time as you complete the program. If you’re interested in obtaining your teacher certification without earning your Master of Education, ASU also offers this standalone online teacher certification graduate certificate.

Both pathways ensure you receive the support and experience necessary to thrive in today’s evolving educational landscape.

Which Master of Education program is right for you?

Each of ASU’s online Master of Education programs is tailored to fit your specific career goals in education, whether you're pursuing a teaching license or looking to advance your career and knowledge.

If you’re looking to teach grades 6–12 and earn certification, this secondary education master’s with teacher certification will be the right choice for you. If you don’t want certification and prefer to focus on expanding your expertise in educational theory, our Master of Education in secondary education program is a better option for you.

Additionally, ASU offers an online Master of Education in elementary education with certification and without certification. These programs’ curriculum prepares you for grades K–8.

Programs with certification are the most popular option because they meet the widespread requirement for state certification, which all public schools mandate for teaching. While some charter, private and international schools don’t require certification, having it generally opens more teaching opportunities. However, earning a Master of Education without certification can also be beneficial, especially if you’re pursuing roles such as a teacher's aide or instructional assistant, or if you're interested in educational theory and research.

Professional licensure and certification and state authorization
Description

Online Master of Education in Elementary Education – Teacher Certification

Earning your elementary education master’s with teacher certification provides an ideal path if you want to teach grades K–8 and already have a bachelor’s degree in any field. Whether you're a substitute teacher, a non-education professional changing careers or an aspiring educator, this program will guide you through coursework, exams and hands-on experiences to become a subject matter expert in the classroom.

You’ll gain practical skills in classroom management, inclusive teaching and learning design, all while receiving support from a top-ranked college of education. Plus, by committing to teach in Arizona after graduation, you may qualify for the Arizona Teachers Academy at ASU tuition scholarship.

Two pathways to certification

This program offers two flexible pathways to teacher certification, tailored to fit your individual needs. Both options blend theory with practice through expert instruction from ASU faculty and hands-on internship and student teaching experiences. While both paths provide valuable learning opportunities, their structures are designed to accommodate different schedules and preferences.

Both pathways ensure you receive the support and experience necessary to thrive in the evolving educational environment.

Which Master of Education program is right for you?

Each of ASU’s online Master of Education programs is tailored to fit your specific career goals in education, whether you're pursuing a teaching license or looking to advance your career and knowledge.

If you’re looking to teach grades K–8 and earn certification, this elementary education master’s with teacher certification will be the right choice for you. If you don’t want certification and prefer to focus on expanding your expertise in educational theory, our Master of Education in elementary education program is a better option for you.

Additionally, ASU offers an online Master of Education in secondary education with certification and without certification. These programs’ curriculum prepares you for grades 6–12.
