Online Master of Education in Special Education

By connecting theory and practice and through hands-on coursework, you’ll master classroom management, data-driven instruction and teaching strategies. Your learning culminates in an action research applied project, where you’ll identify a real challenge in K–12 education, implement an intervention and measure its impact. This experience ensures you graduate with practical, research-backed solutions to support student success.

Along the way, you’ll build expertise in advocacy, collaboration, critical thinking, data literacy, learning design, principled innovation, technology integration and teacher leadership, preparing you to make a lasting impact.

Choosing the right special education master’s for you

ASU offers multiple online graduate programs in special education, each designed to support different career goals. Advance your expertise, earn teaching certification or specialize in autism or applied behavior analysis with these flexible, research-driven programs.

  • Special education
    • This program will deepen your knowledge of K–12 special education and is ideal if you’re currently certified or do not need certification to reach your goals. While earning this degree does not lead to teacher certification, you’ll build expertise in teaching and research-based intervention strategies.
  • Special education with teacher certification*
    • Designed for students seeking teacher certification in K–12 special education, this program offers two routes:
      • Traditional route: Complete coursework online while gaining hands-on experience through internships and residencies in local school districts. You can earn dual certification in K–8 elementary education and K–12 mild/moderate disabilities special education. A special education-only certification option is also available.
      • Alternative pathway route: Developed for current full-time teachers on an Arizona Alternative Teaching Certificate (or equivalent in other states), this option allows you to immediately apply coursework to your classrooms while earning a K–12 mild/moderate disabilities certification.

*Both routes include teacher observations, internships, apprentice teaching and student teaching to ensure you’ll gain practical, real-world experience.

  • Special education with a concentration in autism spectrum disorders
    • This program prepares educators, interventionists, psychologists, speech pathologists, behavior analysts and family members to provide research-based support for autistic individuals. You may want to pursue this path if working exclusively with children and adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder is a career goal. You’ll complete a customized practicum and an applied project or portfolio demonstrating your expertise.
  • Special education with a concentration in applied behavior analysis (ABA)
    • If you want to specialize in applied behavior analysis (ABA) to support individuals with learning and behavior challenges in education, business or health care, this program — offering verified university coursework for pursuing Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) certification — may be your best choice. While BCBA certification is not required, all instructors are Board Certified Behavior Analysts, ensuring you’ll receive expert guidance. The program culminates in a capstone or applied project.

Online Master of Arts in Special Education – Autism Spectrum Disorders

This program explores evidence-based techniques for supporting autistic individuals in educational, clinical, community and workplace settings. You’ll analyze ASD characteristics, dispel misconceptions and evaluate credible sources to guide families and caregivers. Through case studies and peer collaboration, you’ll develop strategies to design and implement effective support systems.

How our ABA and ASD master’s programs compare

ASU offers graduate programs in autism spectrum disorders and applied behavior analysis (ABA). While neither programs lead to teacher certification, these programs benefit educators, administrators, interventionists, psychologists, speech therapists and families with specialized skills related to either ASD or ABA. For those interested in a graduate program that leads to teacher certification, consider ASU’s online Master of Education in special education – teacher certification.

  • Master of Arts in special education – autism spectrum disorders
    • This program focuses on understanding ASD and providing a range of support to help autistic individuals thrive. Coursework aligns with the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) autism special education standards and emphasizes evidence-based strategies for learning and development. You’ll complete a practicum, gaining hands-on experience through 45 direct contact hours under supervision. Working with an autistic individual in a school, community or family setting is required to meet program requirements.
  • Master of Arts in special education – applied behavior analysis (ABA)
    • Through this program, you’ll learn behavior assessment and intervention, preparing you to support individuals with ASD, ADHD and other learning and behavioral needs. This program follows a systematic, research-based approach to behavior modification, leading to eligibility for the Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) examination.

Both programs provide practical experience and evidence-based training, helping professionals create meaningful, individualized support strategies.

Online Graduate Certificate in Applied Behavior Analysis

Coursework in this applied behavior analysis certificate emphasizes behavior analytic frameworks and applications. You'll explore the systematic and scientific processes behind ABA and gain hands-on skills to create meaningful change. This includes learning empathetic strategies to address behavior in children, adults, families and communities.

Additionally, you’ll gain essential client-centered skills such as empathy and active listening, to ensure you deliver services with integrity. You’ll develop expertise in creating and applying behavior intervention plans, all while considering ethical and professional best practices. Upon graduation, you’ll have the tools to assess, treat and manage behavior effectively in clinics, schools and other settings.

A pathway to BCBA certification

The courses included in this certificate meet the coursework requirements for the BCBA exam. However, you’ll still need to meet the other requirements to qualify for the test. You’re not required to earn BCBA certification to complete this certificate program. There are many jobs in education, counseling and social work where ABA skills are useful, but BCBA certification is not required. These jobs may require different credentials or certifications.

The time to earn BCBA certification will vary based on your circumstances. You may be able to complete this online ABA certificate in five semesters, which equates to about a year and a half. You’ll need to fulfill further requirements before sitting for the BCBA exam, which means earning BCBA certification may take longer than the time it takes to complete this graduate certificate.

Who’s a good candidate for this ABA certificate program?

This program is ideal for individuals passionate about making a positive impact on the lives of others. It’s a great fit if you enjoy working with and helping people, especially those with special learning or behavioral needs. Whether your interests lie in organizational behavior, psychology or pursuing a career as a BCBA, this program equips you with the skills you’ll need to succeed.

You’ll learn how to assess the behavior of individuals in various environments such as students in classrooms, patients in clinics or employees in workplaces. If you’re driven to understand the function of behavior and apply that knowledge to create meaningful change, this program is the perfect match for you. Note that earning your applied behavior analysis certificate online from ASU means completing a nondegree graduate program. If you’re interested in earning a graduate degree, our Master of Arts in special education – applied behavior analysis can be earned alongside this program or in place of it.

Online Graduate Certificate in Autism Spectrum Disorders

In this program, you’ll gain in-depth knowledge of the characteristics of autism spectrum disorders, common treatment techniques, learning strategies and ways to collaborate with other professionals in the field. You’ll also have the opportunity to practice applying some of these techniques with an individual with autism.

Additional skills you’ll build that apply to working in the field or better supporting individuals with ASD in your personal life include:

  • Applying the behaviorist perspective and relevant techniques.
  • Interventions to support individuals with ASD, especially in school settings.
  • Understanding the concerns of individuals with autism and their support systems.

Who can benefit from earning an autism certificate?

A broad range of people who care for and support the growth and development of autistic individuals may benefit from this program. The curriculum provides action-oriented strategies and interventions for family members and professionals, such as:

  • Educators.
  • Interventionists.
  • Paraprofessionals.
  • Psychologists.

If you’re interested in pursuing licenses, endorsements or certifications, you must contact your state education agency to determine if the program meets local requirements and fulfills your needs.

Can I become a certified autism specialist with this certificate?
