Tailor your studies to your career goals

You’ll have the opportunity to tailor your education through one of two specialized tracks. These pathways will equip you with targeted knowledge and skills to address pressing challenges in health care and biotechnology industries. Within these tracks, you can further specialize through several areas of emphasis such as bioimaging, bioinstrumentation, neural rehabilitation engineering and artificial intelligence.

  • Biomedical device design: This track emphasizes the engineering principles and technical expertise needed to design, develop and optimize devices that interact with the human body. You’ll learn to create medical tools such as imaging systems, diagnostic equipment, wearable sensors and rehabilitation devices, using a combination of mechanical, electrical and software engineering.
  • Biological device design: This track leverages biological principles to engineer systems and devices that harness or manipulate biological materials. You’ll explore innovative solutions such as tissue scaffolds, synthetic biology applications, bioengineered sensors and gene editing technologies to improve therapies and patient outcomes.

An engineering degree for those aspiring to medical school

If your sights are set on medical school, this biomedical engineering program offers exceptional preparation through its focus on health innovation. A degree in engineering, preferably biomedical engineering, is a prerequisite for admission to ASU’s new engineering-based
School of Medicine and Advanced Medical Engineering. Developed with clinical partners, the medical school’s program allows you to earn both an MD and a Master of Science in medical engineering. Graduates will shape the future of medicine as innovators, problem solvers and leaders in health care.

Additionally, there's the partnership between ASU and Mayo Clinic, designed to provide you with valuable clinical perspectives and the opportunity to design engineering solutions for real-world medical challenges. One notable example is the Mayo Clinic/ASU Synapse internship, where biomedical engineering students shadow physicians and collaborate to design and build medical devices that address pressing clinical needs. Participants of this program earn a certificate from Mayo Clinic in addition to their ASU diploma.

Online Master of Science in Engineering in Sustainable Engineering

The core principle of sustainable engineering is to enable long-lasting improvement of the human experience. One key goal toward this mission is avoiding any serious or irreparable damage to the environment. Similarly, sustainable engineers strive to complete work that supports the availability of natural resources in the future. Incorporating sustainability into engineering from the ground up is an increasingly common strategy in many engineering professions.

The topics covered in this program may sound similar to the goals of a master’s in environmental engineering program. However, engineering professionals with a sustainability focus consider a wider variety of concerns for every project. Along with the environment, they also consider a project’s potential influence on societies, economies and local governments.

The skills you’ll gain in this master’s program

Sustainable engineering roles typically require at least a bachelor’s degree with many senior positions preferring applicants who have a graduate degree as well. This program can prepare you to advance within your current sustainable engineering career or equip you to make a career change. In this program, you’ll develop the technical knowledge and skills necessary to succeed in this industry. You can expect to build expertise with:

  • Core sustainable engineering principles.
  • Engineering and technological systems.
  • Essential tools, such as life cycle assessment and design for sustainability.
  • Key environmental and social considerations and how they can be integrated into technology design.
  • Natural and human-made system modeling, dynamics and adaptive behavior.
  • Technical communication.

Who’s a good candidate for this program?

This program builds on engineering fundamentals while incorporating an emphasis on sustainability to help you develop specialized knowledge in this field. The ideal candidate for this program is someone with a technical background in the natural sciences or engineering from an undergraduate degree or previous work experience. You may also qualify if you have educational and career experience in physics, chemistry or environmental-related fields. However, you may need to take a few additional courses to complete the degree and gain the technical expertise required for the advanced courses in this program.

Online Nuclear Power Generation Graduate Certificate

Educational requirements for nuclear power plant employees vary based on role. Many positions, however, require some form of college education related to nuclear energy.

This nuclear power generation certificate teaches you the fundamentals of nuclear energy, engineering and nuclear power plant operation. This knowledge is a requirement for some nuclear power plant positions and is essential for building your career in nuclear energy over the long term. The certificate can also prepare you for graduate degree programs in nuclear engineering, which opens up more opportunities in the field.

How do I become a nuclear power reactor operator?

Becoming a nuclear power plant operator involves:

  • Building work experience in a nuclear power plant.
  • Completing nuclear power reactor operator training.
  • Passing a series of tests to show competency, both with nuclear power in general and within a specific plant.
  • Earning a license from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

A nuclear power generation certificate can set you apart from other candidates when seeking an operator position. The advanced knowledge you build in this program can also prepare you for the testing and certification process required of all reactor operators.

Who should consider earning a nuclear power generation certificate?

If you have a strong background in science and math as well as an interest in nuclear power generation, you are likely a good fit for this program. The top candidates will have an electrical or nuclear engineering degree, but these credentials are not required. Many professionals in nuclear power come from other scientific disciplines. It is common for students who have the needed math and science background to complete this certificate without previous nuclear power experience.

This certificate can be completed on its own for professional development or in tandem with an online master’s degree program. If you decide to pair this certificate with an engineering master’s degree you’ll be able to gain a broad skill set across disciplines and leverage engineering courses to complete both programs.
