Arizona State University offers the first fully online electrical engineering degree accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET. This means the online degree meets the commission’s educational standards and prepares students to excel in engineering fields.
The electrical engineering degree starts with fundamental courses focused on advanced math, science and the engineering design process. Later in the program, you’ll have the opportunity to take specialty courses covering electromagnetic fields, microprocessors, solid-state electronics, hardware design, circuits, photovoltaic cells, energy systems and more. Lab courses include industry-standard design and simulation tools to help you apply your knowledge and gain practical experience.
As a student in this program, you’ll also have the option to pursue a concentration in electric power and energy systems.
What do electrical engineers do?
Electrical engineers design, develop and test electrical equipment and systems. This means their work ranges from managing the largest power grids to designing the smallest electrical components in your cell phone. A few examples include creating algorithms to better process digital signals, working on antennas, designing circuits systems, developing transistors and more. As the world becomes increasingly digital and electronic, electrical engineers are needed in a variety of fields including:

What skills do electrical engineers need?
Electrical engineers must be able to assess, create and improve electrical equipment and energy systems. This requires a deep knowledge of electrical engineering concepts and transferable skills such as problem-solving and project management. In an electrical engineering degree, you’ll learn how to do just that with courses and labs focused on circuits, signal processing, antennas, power system analysis and more. You’ll also learn important mathematical reasoning, computer programming and critical thinking skills.
In this electrical engineering degree, you will develop engineering skills with a focus on the design of electric power systems, electronics, signal processing algorithms, antennas and semiconductor devices. You’ll be prepared for careers that pioneer new technologies in the energy sector, robotics, computing and beyond.
If you’re a full-time student, you can earn your online electrical engineering degree in four years, though the actual time you spend may vary based on your circumstances. In general, during the first two years of study, you’ll develop a foundation in the essential principles of engineering and electricity. Over the next two years, you may specialize in specific electrical engineering subfields. The program concludes with a two-semester design lab, during which you work with your peers to create an original project.
