Online Master of Science in Aging

This program provides an advanced understanding of aging and equips you with specialized skills to improve outcomes. You’ll learn to advocate for older adults, educate others on age-inclusive practices and drive change in how society supports aging populations.

Comprehensive training in aging can open doors to diverse career paths and leadership opportunities. Beyond health care, your expertise will be valuable in sectors that serve older adults, ranging from insurance and banking to law and social work.

You’ll graduate prepared to lead in long-term care, aging services, case management, palliative care and end-of-life care. You may also pursue research opportunities or launch senior-focused ventures.

The knowledge and skills you’ll develop

Courses explore gerontological frameworks to understand the holistic needs of older patients, including how to distinguish normal aging from signs of abnormality. You’ll examine the physical, psychological and social impacts of acute and chronic conditions. Coursework also addresses the broad scope of supporting older adults through direct care and systems-level solutions.

In addition to theoretical knowledge, you’ll build hands-on skills to:

  • Advocate for health care policy reform.
  • Analyze and apply aging-related research.
  • Assess response to interventions.
  • Design and implement evidence-based programs.
  • Effectively communicate with older adults.
  • Navigate the financial aspects of aging, such as retirement, health care, wills and trusts.
  • Provide support to caregivers.

Prepare for gerontologist credentialing from an Age-Friendly University

ASU is recognized as an Age-Friendly University by the Gerontological Society of America, joining a global network committed to advancing age-inclusive programs and policies. This program’s curriculum is guided by the Academy for Gerontology in Higher Education competencies and provides a strong academic foundation in aging and older adult well-being.

After graduating, you can apply for the gerontologist credential through the National Association of Professional Gerontologists (NAPG). This designation can strengthen your resume and support your career advancement.

Online Bachelor of Science in Speech and Hearing Science

This bachelor’s in speech and hearing science can be a stepping stone toward rewarding careers in the health and behavioral fields. The curriculum is designed to build your understanding of normal speech, hearing and language development and then delve into disorder identification, diagnosis and treatment.

As a graduate, you’ll be equipped to pursue entry-level positions such as audiology assistant, hearing aid or cochlear implant company representative and research assistant. You’ll also have the education to support obtaining a speech-language pathology assistant (SPLA) license in Arizona; although you must also complete 100 hours of supervised clinical experience, pass the exam and meet all other requirements. Additionally, many students apply to master’s programs in speech-language pathology and communications disorders or doctoral programs in audiology.

The knowledge and skills you’ll develop

This program emphasizes the anatomy and physiology of the hearing mechanism, speech, language and hearing science, and the human communication system. In upper-division courses, you’ll explore related disorders children and adults face. These can include developmental delays, autism, stroke, dementia, Alzheimer's disease, speech production problems, Parkinson’s, Lou Gehrig’s disease (ALS) and brain injuries.

You’ll also develop practical skills such as preparing medical reports, analyzing speech or hearing data, collecting clinical data, phonetic transcription and hearing screening. Additionally, you’ll gain introductory experience in writing treatment goals and implementing treatment under the supervision of licensed field professionals.

The differences between speech-language pathology and audiology

Speech-language pathology and audiology are distinct fields that rely on advanced speech and hearing sciences knowledge. Audiologists focus on identifying and treating hearing-related disorders and balance issues for people of all ages. Speech-language pathologists also work with individuals of all ages and aim to improve communication for those with speech, language and swallowing disorders. This program is an excellent step toward impactful and helping careers in either of these fields.

Audiologists and speech-language pathologists are in high demand, can be well-paid and must have education beyond the bachelor’s level. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment for audiologists is expected to grow 11% from 2022 to 2032, which is much faster than average for all occupations. The median pay in 2023 was $87,749. For speech-language pathologists, employment is expected to grow 19% in the same time frame and the median salary in 2023 was $89,290.

Online Health Care Innovation Graduate Certificate

Health care innovation refers to positive changes that improve one or more aspects of medical care delivery, from policies and technologies to administration, provision of care and much more. Because innovation encompasses the entire world of health care in this context, it’s an especially broad concept.

Entrepreneurial opportunities in health care might include, among many other potential avenues and options:

Online Master of Science in Biomedical Diagnostics

Biomedical diagnostics captures the critical data that guides disease detection, treatment decisions and personalized health management. These insights drive clinical decisions, improving patient outcomes and advancing global health.

Coursework and specialized training explore the science and technology of diagnostics, as well as key topics such as health economics, policy and regulatory frameworks. You’ll gain the expertise to succeed in a rapidly evolving field and contribute to groundbreaking advancements in health care.

The knowledge and skills you’ll develop in this program

The fast-growing biomedical diagnostics field offers various career opportunities, requiring a broad scope of knowledge and skills. To equip you with a more holistic understanding of biomedical diagnostics, the curriculum spans five core areas, including:

  • Application: Investigate case studies on bioethics, clinical utility, intellectual property and smart systems, as well as modality integration and systems analysis.
  • Business: Navigate public and private health care finance and reimbursement, along with personalized health care and companion diagnostics.
  • Policy: Examine the role of public policy in addressing public health needs through the advancement of diagnostics.
  • Science: Focus on underlying bioinformatics and bio-statistical analysis, clinical trial design and regulatory systems, as well as the technology behind imaging pathology, molecular and immunological testing platforms.
  • Technology: Explore instrument and assay development, biomedical engineering and diagnostic product development.

How this program compares to a master’s in biomedical sciences

A master’s in biomedical sciences offers a broad overview of the biomedical field without specializing in a particular area. In contrast, this master’s in biomedical diagnostics provides an in-depth understanding of the science, technology, business and application of diagnostics — focusing on the critical role diagnostics play in health care decision-making and innovation.

This program provides a deep understanding of how modern medicine uses diagnostics to detect disease, guide treatment and advance personal care. You’ll investigate the broader impact of diagnostics, from driving pharmaceutical and technology advancements to shaping health care policy and regulatory decisions worldwide.
