Online Master of Arts in Social Justice and Human Rights

Throughout this program, you’ll learn key issues, theories and applied practices related to global justice and humanitarianism. You’ll also address how intersecting dimensions of social identity influence human rights, including gender, race, ethnicity, class, sexuality and nationality.

While studying these topics, you’ll gain the skills needed to design research projects and write grants to support the research and practice of social justice and human rights nonprofit managers and scholars.

Who’s a good candidate for this program?

This program aligns with those who have previous experience in human rights and social justice work or a general interest in these topics. However, the most important factor for interested students is a passion for understanding social injustice. As long as you have a bachelor’s or master’s degree from a regionally accredited institution, you can apply to this program.

Why it’s worth it to get a master’s in social justice and human rights

In addition to advancing your career, earning a master's in human rights and social justice is a great way to determine what social justice and human rights issues you’re most passionate about. To graduate from this program, you’re required to complete a wide range of thematic courses and a capstone e-portfolio. Not only does this allow you to build on existing knowledge and experience, but it’s also a great way to deepen your understanding and gain new skills. Topics you’ll explore include:

  • Gender-based violence and sex trafficking.
  • International law and organizations.
  • Migration, asylum and refugees.

You’ll also have opportunities to participate in original research focused on immigration. Learn more about this research.

Online Nonprofit Leadership and Management Graduate Certificate

In this nonprofit management certificate program, you’ll develop general leadership abilities and knowledge needed to oversee a nonprofit organization. Specific areas of focus include creative problem-solving, strategic planning, fundraising, volunteer management and more. You’ll also learn the history and philosophy of nonprofits while taking a deeper dive into the concepts of theory, research and practice used in modern nonprofit management.

Earn a master’s degree through stackable certificates

This graduate certificate can stand alone or serve as a main certificate toward a Master of Advanced Study. To complete the degree, you’ll stack a second 15-credit graduate certificate. This opportunity allows you to design a program tailored to your career goals and interests.

When admitted, connect with your academic advisor about stackable MAS options.

What makes me a good candidate for this nonprofit leadership and management certificate?

The nonprofit leadership and management certificate is ideal for students who have or wish to gain professional work experience in the nonprofit sector. This certificate is also a good option for those currently pursuing a master’s degree. Earning a graduate certificate in nonprofit leadership and management can build a bridge between your current skill set and other senior roles in this field. Overall, this certificate complements several areas of study, including:

  • Emergency management and homeland security.
  • Family and human development.
  • Health care innovation.
  • Public safety leadership and administration.
  • Sustainability leadership.

Can this certificate prepare me to start a nonprofit or operate a small, local organization?

While the nonprofit management certificate can support a variety of professionals, it is not intended to address the needs of individuals who are:

  • Planning to start a new nonprofit.
  • Seeking a practical education on operating a small nonprofit.

If these situations apply to you, you may want to consider alternative options for learning, such as the ASU Lodestar Center’s Nonprofit Management Institute.

  • A concentration is a formalized selection of courses within a major. A concentration requires a minimum of 15 credit hours of which at least nine credit hours must be upper division. Your concentration appears on both your ASU diploma and your transcripts.
  • An emphasis is a selected topic area defined within the major. It’s typically 9–12 credit hours and doesn’t need to be officially declared. The emphasis will not appear on your diploma or transcripts.

Online Master of Legal Studies – Corporate and Health Care Compliance Emphasis

Industries such as health care, insurance and banking are highly regulated fields with a variety of legal guidelines they are required to follow. Compliance law focuses on mandating the regulations these organizations must follow to continue operating safely and legally. Large institutions often establish compliance departments dedicated to creating processes to track these requirements and manage data verifying organizational track records.

Whether you’re looking to advance in your career or make a switch into this field, this MLS program can support your goals by building your knowledge of the legal principles that underlie various business and health care regulations. This educational background can facilitate your understanding of how to create institutional frameworks in your organizations that meet policy demands.

The skills and knowledge you’ll develop

This program equips you with the skills and knowledge needed to implement relevant laws, regulations and ethical standards within organizations of any size. Your expertise will help businesses uphold legal and ethical standards, avoid reputational damage and build trust with stakeholders and employees. You’ll be well prepared to take on these challenges after gaining skills such as:

  • Assessing and managing risk
  • Conducting internal investigations
  • Developing compliance processes and programs
  • Enforcing ethical decision-making
  • Interpreting regulations and compliance requirements
  • Managing recordkeeping and reporting

Additionally, you’ll study strategies for devising and maintaining reporting mechanisms associated with industry guidelines. Through foundational courses and electives, you’ll also build abilities in legal writing and other broadly applicable skills.

What is a degree emphasis? Is it the same as a concentration?

A degree program’s emphasis is similar to a concentration, but there are key differences.

Online Bachelor of Science in Psychology – Forensic Psychology

Forensic psychology is the application of psychology to the law, and this online forensic psychology degree concentration combines general training in psychology with specialized course work in criminal law, criminal behavior, the diagnosis and treatment of mental disorders and legal decision-making.

A bachelor’s degree such as this — one of the only undergraduate degrees on this topic in the nation — can be your first step on your path to graduate and doctoral education, which are needed to pursue advanced roles in the field. For example, you’ll need to complete a graduate degree to work as a psychologist and becoming a forensic psychologist requires a PhD.

As a forensic psychologist, you may help determine the mental state of criminal defendants. You could also work in other parts of the justice system, including law enforcement or corrections.

Choosing between a BA and BS in forensic psychology

ASU Online offers both a BA and BS in psychology with a concentration in forensic psychology.

This BS program provides more of a foundation in math and science and it emphasizes biological and neuroscientific understanding. The BS is intended to support advanced study through the exploration of topics and concepts in psychology, clinical applications and public policy. As such, you’ll need to take additional lab courses and advanced statistical training. There are also more math and science requirements.

Our Bachelor of Arts in forensic psychology focuses on concepts related to human behavior and the justice system. It focuses less on math and science, instead offering more electives and course selection you can use to customize your undergraduate studies.

Both degrees can be useful for applying to graduate programs, but the BS may be preferable for this.

Criminal psychology vs forensic psychology: How are they different?

Criminal psychology and forensic psychology are two related but distinct fields of study.

  • Criminal psychology focuses on the psychology of criminal behavior, including the motives and thought processes that lead individuals to commit crimes.
  • Forensic psychology applies psychology to legal issues and the criminal justice system.

Both fields are important for understanding and addressing criminal behavior and improving the effectiveness of the criminal justice system.
