Online Master of Engineering – Engineering Management Emphasis

There’s high demand for technically skilled engineers who have the business acumen and leadership capabilities to manage effective teams. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) projects 6% job growth for engineering managers from 2023 to 2033, which is faster than average for all occupations. In 2024, engineering managers earned a median salary of $167,740, outpacing earnings for major engineering job categories.

This program is built for working professionals who want to expand their role and make a broader organizational impact. The curriculum advances your technical and leadership skills, providing the tools to increase your strategic value and earning potential.

Engineering and technology leadership roles span industries. To tailor your path, you’ll choose courses that align with your career goals. You also have the opportunity to earn ASU’s online graduate certificate in Lean Six Sigma Black Belt while completing your degree. This added credential can give you a competitive edge when pursuing management positions.

The knowledge and skills you'll develop

In this hands-on engineering management emphasis, you’ll gain applied skills you can use in any management role, including risk management, Six Sigma and technology leadership.

Courses also expand your technical expertise in:

  • Experiment design and execution
  • Project and quality management
  • Software quality assurance
  • Statistical learning
  • Supply chain modeling

By graduation, you’ll be equipped to streamline operations, improve processes and lead high-performing teams. You’ll show impact by making data-informed decisions and guiding projects from start to finish.

What is a degree emphasis? Is it the same as a concentration?

A degree emphasis is similar to a concentration, but there are key differences.

  • A concentration is a formalized selection of courses within a major. A concentration requires a minimum of 15 credit hours of which at least nine credit hours must be upper division. Your concentration appears on both your ASU diploma and your transcripts.
  • An emphasis is a selected topic area defined within the major. It’s typically 9–12 credit hours and doesn’t need to be officially declared. The emphasis will not appear on your diploma or transcripts.

Online Master of Science in Construction Management and Technology

Offered through ASU’s Del E. Webb School of Construction, this master’s program allows you to develop the advanced technical, management and applied research skills to compete for upper-level management positions in the field. These roles are in demand: According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of construction managers is projected to grow 9% from 2023 to 2033, which is much faster than the average for all occupations.

While construction managers aren’t always required to have a degree, the skills and experience gained in this program can give you a competitive edge when applying for jobs or bidding for contracts. Construction managers are increasingly holding degrees in construction science, architecture or engineering.

Tailor your studies to your career goals

You’ll choose one of two areas of focus for your studies.

  • The construction management focus helps you achieve management positions through improved competency in project, program and organization management.
  • The facility management focus supports your career goals related to maintaining, operating, renovating or decommissioning existing facilities.

Regardless of the focus area you choose, the curriculum of this master’s program is designed to help you meet the growing need for professionals in the construction industry.

Who’s an ideal candidate for this master’s program?

An ideal candidate is someone with a bachelor's degree in construction or a related field such as architecture, business or engineering who’s interested in expanding and improving their professional leadership and management capabilities in construction.

You may also consider pursuing this program as a way to enter the construction field at a leadership level. Many of our most successful construction management alumni had undergraduate degrees in another field and leveraged their master’s education to transition into the construction industry.

Online Bachelor of Arts in Organizational Leadership

Organizational leadership is a management strategy that prioritizes motivation, teamwork and a shared dedication to workplace success. Within this framework, organizational leaders establish company goals and oversee team efficiency and morale.

This organizational leadership degree focuses on developing innovative leaders who can build and support a cohesive and productive workplace environment.

The knowledge and skills you’ll develop in this program

A bachelor’s in organizational leadership can help you achieve your goal of becoming an impactful manager, forward-thinking leader and visionary in your field. This is not a business degree; the focus is on leadership rather than aspects of business.

The exact duties of a leader will vary depending on the industry and organization you work for. But the following key skills you gain through this program will support most leadership roles:

  • Conflict management.
  • Critical thinking.
  • Decision-making.
  • Delegation.
  • Problem-solving.
  • Strategic planning.

What can you do with an organizational leadership degree?

Organizations in the private, public and nonprofit sectors all have a demand for influential leaders. These companies need leaders with the ability to communicate clearly, motivate their teams and improve their bottom line. This program will help you develop the skills needed to lead organizations toward accomplishing their goals and objectives.

Additionally, this bachelor’s degree can be completed as part of an accelerated master’s program. When accepted, you can earn a bachelor’s and master’s degree in as little as one extra year after completing your undergraduate degree. This opportunity saves you time and money while giving you advanced knowledge in your field. Applicable master’s degrees include:

Online Bachelor of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies

This program allows you to build a custom degree by combining two academic disciplines into one major.

You’ll select two concentrations from more than 40 available options, with advisors available to help you choose the ones best for you. It's an ideal program for those who are undecided on a major or want to pursue multiple areas of study.

One of the most popular combinations is to pair a concentration in business with a second focus in psychology. Other complementary options include:

  • Applied business data analytics and business
  • Business and project management
  • Business and real estate
  • Counseling/applied psychology sciences with family studies
  • Family and human development and communication
  • Personal health and integrative health
  • Project management and sustainability
  • Science, technology and society with technical entrepreneurship and management
  • Sales and marketing essentials and organizational leadership

A culminating experience with a focus on experiential learning

IDS 401 is the program’s culminating experience in which you’ll arrange, plan and execute a learning project. Throughout this course, you’ll be guided in applying, analyzing, synthesizing and evaluating interdisciplinary concepts to a real-world problem.

You’ll choose from one of the three options below. The College of Integrative Sciences and Arts will work with you to help you find a project that fits your interests. No matter which you choose, the experience will integrate both your concentrations in a meaningful way:

  • Applied study: The applied study is a traditional work experience where you’ll spend 120 hours at a site of your choosing putting your integration and concentration area knowledge into practice. In addition to the hours completed onsite, there will be an online class component where you’ll reflect on your internship work.
  • Directed study: A directed study is a thesis, creative or research project that you’ll design in consultation with a faculty member. This option is best suited for you if you’re interested in graduate school or have a creative project you’re interested in pursuing. This can be a great way to start a CV, create a portfolio or design your own project.
  • Research fellows: You’ll partner with School of Applied Sciences and Arts faculty to assist them with research and ongoing faculty-led projects. This option is highly competitive, so you should begin planning for this option early.

Upskill with a master’s degree

This bachelor’s degree can be completed as part of an Accelerated Master’s program. When accepted, you can earn a master’s degree in as little as one year after completing your undergraduate degree. This opportunity saves you time and money while giving you advanced knowledge in your field. Applicable master’s degrees include:
